How A Dress Should Fit - 1947

If you want a vintage pattern to fit well you need to go by your measurements, since sizing changes over time and even between the different pattern companies. So you need to know how to measure correctly for the era you are trying to re-create. This mid forties Simplicity Sewing Book gives you some guidelines.
Be sure to wear all the right supportive undergarments and shoes. You're on your own for the hair-do!

"If you check your pattern with your measurements and make adjustments before cutting your fabric, fitting your dress will be easy.
Try your dress on right side out and stand before a long mirror. You should have a basting thread from top to bottom in the center back and front (unless there is a center opening serve as well to check the perpendicular line).
Keep the picture of the garment before you while you fit. It can be tacked to the corner of your mirror. You need pins and a tape measure also.
Pin the shoulder pads in place before you begin your fitting.
These diagrams show how your garment should hang. If seams or darts must be taken up or let out to gain the desired effect, pin the corrections and transfer the change with chalk on the wrong side after you take the garment off.
Lengthwise threads of the material down center front and center back should be perfectly straight and perpendicular to the floor. (Except in a bias cut dress).
Crosswise threads Should be straight across figure and parallel to floor at bust and hip.
Underarm seam should fall in a straight vertical line from the center of the arm pit to the floor.
Regulation shoulder seams should be directly on top of shoulder, sloping neither to the front nor the back.
Garment should be loose but without wrinkles at the bust line to give ease, and allow arm to move freely. About 4 inches larger than bust measurement is usual allowance.
At a point about six and a half inches below the top of the sleeve the crosswise grain should run parallel with the floor and the lengthwise grain parallel to the underarm seam. It should allow for movement of upper arm It should be without wrinkles. Darts or gathers in long sleeve should come at the elbow.
Skirt should fall straight down from hips allowing ease to sit and not pull or cup up under when standing."

We are getting ready for a snow storm which we don't really do here in Seattle, but it put me in mind of sweaters. Then I found these hippy chick knits for you to make.
(If anybody really wants instructions I'll try to accomodate you, but I'm not sure this sort of thing should be encouraged.)

Knitted patchworks play a visual game on a color-sliced cardigan that rides atop a pair of matching pants. Garter stitch strips knit in varying colors are joined with strips of crochet. "KNOW YOUR OWN MEASUREMENTS

Choosing the right foundation can be a pretty perplexing job. You can save some of the salesgirl's time and your own if you go into the store knowing whether you are short- or long-waisted and what your bust, waist and hip measures are. This is the way to take your measurements: 1. Bust size. Hold a tape measure directly below the bust, then add 5 inches for your true size. Cup sizes for your bra may best be determined by the fitter. 2. Hip size. Make sure that you measure the fullest part of the hip. This is usually about 8 inches below the waist. 3. Waist size. Take a loose measure for accuracy. 4. Short waist? Long waist? Measure from directly below the bust to the waist to find out if you're short (3-4 inches), medium (5-6 inches) or long (6 1/2-7 inches). 5. Girdle length. A measure from waist to directly below the fullest part of the thigh will give you the right length. (This is important - a too-short girdle will ride up, a too-long girdle bind.) This measurement has nothing to do with your height.

WHEN YOU ARE FITTED

1. Move about in the garment and sit down-your flesh expands when you move or are seated. 2. Do not buy a size too small - this creates new bulges. 3. If your flesh is firm, you'll need less control than you will if it tends toward flabbiness. You'll find this out as the middle years come on. 4. A well-fitted girdle should control without causing a bulge or roll and without riding up.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

Each type of foundation has a definite purpose. The all-in-one smooths away the bulges and gives a clean unbroken line that's especially good under slim dresses. High-waisted girdles paired off with long-line bras also give a smooth line and solve a special problem for women with full hips and small bust or large bust and average hip size (separates that suit your specific needs). For really firm control in the hip area there are lightweight garments with elastic panels at front, back and both sides. This eliminates the discomfort of heavy boning."

This 1956 article from Woman's Home Companion is titled "A New Simplicity touches our lives today". They show the new influences in room decor and what you should be wearing in these rooms.
"This new simplicity all around us comes from many sources-one of the most important is our new awareness of the restraint and beauty in Eastern design. Each generation since Marco Polo has rediscovered the Orient in its own way, drawing from it the ideas and qualities which suited its needs and which cave sparkle to its life. Our own generation is no exception. For us, the discovery has been vibrant colors on the one hand, serene monotones on the other. We reach out for the restraint, the simplicity of line, the lightness of scale-for everything, in fact, that brings a sense of space or that seems uncluttered to our extremely cluttered lives.
The richness and splendor of the East, which have always appealed to earlier generations, are for us only implicit in the materials we choose. This picture and much of the text stresses how sanitary everything is. Which may have been a response to the Polio epidemics that frightened everyone (the most memorable was in 1916, but outbreaks continued through the 1950's).

"Here's how they did it!"
"He's so hard to buy for!" The cliche fitted Mr. Joseph Ambrosia, of New York City, to a T; but Mrs. Ambrosia and nineteen -year-old Sandy found the perfect solution. Their Christmas present to Dad this year: a dramatically prettier wife and daughter. The transformation, supervised by our Beauty Clinic, took about two months, but didn't interrupt business-as-usual for Mrs. Ambrosia, a housewife, mother of four, and dedicated church worker, or for Sandy, a Good Housekeeping secretary, drama student, and a bit of a butterfly. Was their "present" a success? We leave it to you. Look at the pictures on the following pages, and see what you think.

A ban on nail biting was the first step for both Ambrosias. Sandy was a cuticle-chewer, too. But weekly manicures in the Beauty Clinic and the delight of having good-looking nails strengthened their determination. Once a day, Sandy smoothed on cuticle cream and her mother soaked brittle nails in nail hardener. Mrs. Ambrosia pampered rough hands often, with cream or lotion, and took to wearing gloves for every household chore. Results? Just see the pictures?
Sandy's eyes are brown and almond shape. And they smile when she does. But they needed a touch of boldness. We plucked the mischievous hairs beneath and between her brows, giving them a clean outward sweep. Shimmering green eye shadow contrasted with dark eyes, and long, thick lashes were tipped with mascara.
Make-up for the office had meant lipstick only-until we gave good reasons and showed results to our amateur actress. On Sandy's naturally oily skin, we used dry cake make-up. Contour curves under the eyes were lightened with ivory-tone foundation. A prominent chin retired with a darker foundation. Two powderings - the first as a prime coat, the second as a finish -prettied the clearest skin Sandy ever had. Her expressive eyes (the envy of the Beauty Clinic staff) are described above. Lipstick in a Christmas pumpkin shade was simpatico with her coral dress and nails.
Dad's biggest presents were his girls' new hair styles. All year long he had been hinting, in tactful male fashion, that Sandy and her mother have their hair styled. He'd tweak Sandy's pony tail and point to his own easy-to-manage hairdo.

The miracle of posture. Before her beauty course, Sandy walked and worked as though she had weights on her ears. Before: head and shoulders drooped, chest collapsed, as she read the paper. After - packages held at waist level, head high, chest expanded, back straight, shoulders wide.

It took courage for Sandy to part with her pony tail. Her last haircut had been a full year before. But after a few minutes of deft cutting and shaping, our gamine began to emerge. Gone were the unruly bangs, the wispy temple hairs, the long tress with its plaguing split ends. Sandy made one plea when we were styling her hair: "Please give me a hairdo that doesn't need much setting." We chose a short, face-framing style, with a smooth crown and sides that curled ever so gently about the ears. Sandy's fine hair curled willingly and stayed pretty-with the promised very little setting - when hair spray was used to set and hold it. A hair rinse, which added red highlights, also gave it more body. And a nightly routine of vigorous brushing rewarded Sandy with newly lustrous locks.
Sandy's complexion had always been her pet peeve. Like so many young skins, hers was oily and often dotted with blemishes and blackheads. Her new beauty regimen called for frequent lathering with medicated soap, followed by lots of hot, then cool, water and an astringent. At night, she hid her blemishes under healing cream, and twice a week applied a facial mask for oily skin. A wholesome diet, with no blemish - making sweets, clarified her skin in two months.

Mrs. Ambrosia impatiently waited her turn in the beauty chair. Like many busy women, she bad long ignored the feminine arts for more practical matters. Now she was in a rush to become a "new woman." We cut her hair and fashioned a short, pert style, with hair brushed up and back from the sides and pouffed high on top in a modified Empress coif, to slim her roundish face. A gentle, rod-type permanent disciplined her soft, fine hair, giving it body and a naturally curly look. Dandruff disappeared under the persuasion of a good antidandruff treatment, administered with weekly regularity. The final touch was a rich coppery rinse, which gave her dull locks new vitality.

Two figure problems confronted Mrs. Ambrosia: padded bips and poor posture bothered her in every costume. We gave her a series of exercises to tone and tighten the little bulges. A faithful student, she exercised 20 minutes every busy day. The result: waist and hips measured two inches smaller. "I'm going to keep it up," Mrs. Ambrosia told us. "I feel more nimble." A balanced, low-calorie diet trimmed off seven extra pounds in two months. Exercise improved her posture, gave her a confident air.
"Dry skin makes me look older," she said. We agreed. Early in the game, we explained to Mrs. Ambrosia the gifts of moisture lotion. It worked softening, dewy magic while she slept and under daytime make-up. A creamy foundation, instead of her customary "just powder," was a buffer against sun and wind. Peachy powder livened her pallid complexion. Lifting and lengthening scanty brows with eyebrow pencil and Christmas-green eye shadow on lids gave importance to subdued eyes. Cheating with a Santa-Claus-red lipstick, to give a generous mouth, made her look the winsome matron she is.

"Helen and Stephen F. Zelko Of Cleveland, Ohio live in an apartment on the top floor of Steve's parents' home. They did the painting and decorating themselves, and when they were ready to choose curtains. draperies, and slip covers, Helen realized she could save money by making them herself-if only she knew how to sew. She could, of course, take sewing lessons and then rent a sewing machine. But why rent a machine and reduce the saving to be made by home sewing?
Helen Zelko's dilemma was resolved when Steve suggested that she pick out a brand-new modern sewing machine - one that would also be attractive as a piece of living-room furniture-as his Christmas gift last year. Sewing lessons at the store where she bought the machine would be included in the purchase price.
One problem remained for Helen to solve: She had to arrange for someone to take care of young Stephen while she went to her department-store sewing class. His grandparents, who live downstairs, both have daytime jobs, but Helen's mother and several aunts volunteered to baby-sit while she took her lessons. Helen wanted to learn to sew correctly to avoid time-and money-consuming experimenting, and she says she wouldn't have trusted herself to take on so many ambitious home-sewing jobs if she hadn't first learned how to run her machine efficiently."

I have just received a much loved (read: beat up) copy of The Woman Beautiful or Maidenhood, Marriage and Maternity, 500 pages of advice about everything pertaining to a young woman's life. My copy is so far gone that I can't be sure of the publisher, but other copies are dated from 1901 and the authors listed as Monfort B. Allen M.D and Amelia C. McGregor M.D., apparently they wrote a few of these all encompassing advice books. But remember, books such as these are often all a young gal had to get her through. We'll look at several bits here and be thankful we don't have to live under these rules, charming as they sound.

A Story of Thread..."Issued by the Educational Bureau of Coats & Clark Inc." in 1958. A "Reprint from Stitch in Time Vol. 29 No. 1".
This eight page leaflet tell us more about thread and needles than you could have ever imagined. It involves Napoleon, the Crusaders, the Bayeux Tapestry, "nun's work", the spinning jenny, and of course the history of Coats & Clark company. (Do you know what "O.N.T." stands for?)
Then we get to look inside a modern thread plant. Remember this is from 1958, but I imagine many of the steps are the same today. And I never knew that Mercerizing meant that the threads are run through a caustic soda bath, did you?
The threads that are shown include everything from everyday sewing thread to rug yarn and industrial thread that is used for (among other things) car tops!

This is another mystery plate with no date or clues except the fashions themselves. We've had wonderful luck with knowledgeable commenters and I hope that works this time too. The silhouette is very different, these clothes look much more wearable, but there are still lots of fancy seaming (look at the little boys outfit) and fussy frills, including that parasol and her looking glasses!

Dated May, 1901 it's out of McCall's Magazine and shows in color; McCall 6527 Misses' Guimpe Dress, McCall 6538 Ladies' Eton Jacket and McCall 6540 Ladies' Skirt. In gray tones; McCall 6562 Ladies' Shirt Waist, McCall 6532 Ladies' Skirt, McCall 6559 Misses' Jacket, McCall 6553 Misses' Skirt.
Take note of the way pleats and lace are used on the skirts, and the variety of collars. And while you are considering the serious underwear these women had to have on to get that silhouette, don't forget about how straight you'd have to stand to hold up those hats!

I tried Google Translate and got this close, but I'm sure somebody out there can do better. It is dated February 11, 1860 and numbered 3122.

"...be pieced with sections in the manner described in the paragraph on "Piecing Fur". Fur that is in good condition on the outside but that tears easily because of a tender pelt may be reinforced with cambric. Remove the interlining from the pelt and place the cambric next to the pelt. Quilt the cambric to the pelt, taking stitches 1/2-inch long on the cambric side and catching a very tiny stitch in the pelt. The stitches into the pelt must not catch any of the hair. Do not pull the stitches tight. The entire fur may be reinforced in this way or just the necessary sections may be reinforced. Fig. 24 (1).
Fur may also be quickly reinforced by cementing the cotton cambric. This method is practical only if the pelt is too tender to hold the quilting stitches. Choose a rubber cement or other adhesive such as milliners' glue that does not require heat. With a brush or spatula, spread the cement evenly over the pelt, then apply the cambric. The cambric will in this way adhere to the pelt and stitching is unnecessary. Fig. 24 (J). Finish the fur with interlining and tape as explained before.

Fur Cloth: Good imitations of fur may be purchased by the yard as fur cloth. However, fur cloth should not be confused with fur in construction, for it is treated as a fabric.
In cutting remember that the nap should run down toward the bottom of the garment.
If the fabric has a thick, heavy nap use a long stitch in sewing on the machine. Press all seams over a velvet board. If one is not accessible the seams may be pressed lightly on the wrong side and then steamed as for velvets.
Fur cloth will enhance the beauty of a garment if a good quality is purchased and if the precautions given for cutting and construction are followed closely."

Sometimes I find great stuff in with patterns I buy. These clippings are from the American-Statesman, an Austin, Texas newspaper from Sunday August, 23, 1943. They feature fashions from Yaring's and Scarbrough & Sons, two fine department stores that catered to collage bound gals, school girls and some high end suits and coats - "all sketched from stock"!

Then it's that her cowgirl outfit came from Saks Fifth Avenue. ;-) But Margie McNally did get her own beer can and when on to a famous career with her married name Margie Peterson helping run several car magazines and opening a interior design company.

As I suspected this was a Necchi production...the lovely Mary Beth scanned her copy and shared the introduction pages. This book features the "Necchi Custom DeLuxe (Model BU)", but the tricks and treatments shown work with any machine...but I'm sure the Necchi did it all better!

This 1952 book is a little odd. It actually is two books in one, Modern Home Sewing is the cover title, but it's made up of Modern Machine Sewing by Drucella Lowrie and part two, A Complete Guide to Home Sewing by Sylvia K. Mager. My copy is missing a few front pages of Drucella's section so I am guessing a bit, but since Necchi Sewing machines are featured throughout I think they may have put these two authors together. In any case it was a great idea, this little paperback book has tons of great stuff for us to see, stick around.

I can't find these particular patterns anywhere else, so they may just be out there under vast "Mail Order" categories.
