How cool is it that everything pictures is still very wearable today (except the thing that looks like a peppermint candy) and makes the models look like women.
This is a great article! The written comment gives little value to his popularity in LA with the movie industry starlets prior to his NYC showing in the early 60's (how typical!) I saw that red paisley dress with a draped skirt (on Betty Furness) when the LA County Museum of Art did an exhibition on his work (late 90's). His dresses are simple, yet perfect. I am curious: what magazine did you find this article in, it seems like McCall's 1967?
Jen, Yes, it's from McCall's Magazine, the January, 1967 edition. I try to put my sources in the 'Labels' section...it also helps me keep track. :-) How great that you got to see the actual dress...and now you get to know what she thought of it. And I like that the prices were included...such extravagance.
Yes, the exhibit and video touched on his business and price structure. Essentially it is couture, but he did have some items 'off the rack'. His beading was done locally by an LA based company, so amazingly, it was all locally made.
Welcome! I have this blog to share the treasures I find related to vintage sewing, and vintage fashion with occasional detours into whatever crosses my path. Everything I post is from some actual item I found. If you'd like to buy something you see contact me.
I sell sewing patterns for a living, you'll see the link below. Come on by!
