Let's start with some patterns featured in American Motherhood Magazine, September, 1919. These were mailed out when you sent 10¢. Chances are they were sent from a central clearing house and you could have ordered these same patterns from several magazines. But wherever you got them they were wonderful.

American Motherhood Magazine Fashions from 1919
OK, sorry about that. Just as I was back in the blogging swing of things a family issue took me away. But now everything is peachy and I'm happy to start showing you treasures again.

Redbook Magazine 1919 - It's all about the Men!
We think of Redbook as a women's magazine today, but in 1919 it was called The Red Book Magazine and was aimed at men and women, most of the ads are directed at women, but some of these are for the guys.

Redbook Magazine - 1919 The Ads!
I see a lot of vintage magazines, but my favorite part is almost always the ads. This is no exception, there are many ways for us to peek into what was being sold in 1919. More to come!

"...she values the china too highly to entrust its care to servants..."
Do you know what all these items are?

Redbook Magazine 1919 - Seven Beautiful Women
This is a fabulous find! Redbook Magazine from June 1919. There is lots to share but we are going to start with the "Art Section" and the seven "Beautiful Women". Actually we get to see an eighth because the cover gal is surely beautiful, but she isn't named. The artist is Haskell Coffin. See more of his work here.

Give Her A Torch - by Mary Carolyn Davies - 1919

GIVE HER A TORCH
By Mary Carolyn Davies
Decoration by W.T. Benda
A GIRL sits dreaming at her desk in school.
Her eyes upon her book, and wondering
At all it tells and does not tell.
What rule is there for beauty, or delight, or spring?
She gravely acquiesces and rebels,
And seizes every fact her thick book tells.
She will set out soon, far from desk and book,
With heart impatient and with eager look,
Down that old road that we have trod, a stranger
To all it holds of weariness and danger,
With only what these books have told.
No wisdom of the old
Will help her. We are dumb.
Selfish, we watch her come.
With only chance to guide,
And helpless to decide,
She yet must take, out of life's gifts that wait,
With groping hands, her fate.
Oh, mother, whisper to her; father, speak!
Teacher, can you not yield
Out of your strength a shield
To go before her?
She is young. and weak
And books tell little, and her blood runs free.
Then give her knowledge for a torch when she
Goes forth alone into the mystery,
The darkness that is life, that so she may,
Holding that torch, unerring find her way.

American Motherhood Patterns - 1919
These are from a falling apart magazine, but the patterns you could buy are great...look at those necklines and collars. And those low pockets on the skirts. Give you any ideas?
