This company is still in business and you can read more here.
This is undated, but maybe somebody can recognize that sports car they are leaning on for the back cover.
These sweaters are "Perfect for casual wear the year 'round" and "Soft and fleecy as a cloud", "Gay Designs for Little People", "Smartly Styled", A "Head Start" on Fall Season Fashions, and it's the "Newest Knitting Sensation".
The company is Canadian and started with the novelty sweaters and only wool in 1951, they don't sell many of the novelty style sweaters now and they do not sell wool yarn, only acrylic. You can find the patterns on online though. The earliest patterns didn't have a Cloudspun yarn option. That looks like it's from the very late 50's, early 1960's...
ReplyDeleteI thought that was the date range, but I learned that the catalogs and patterns weren't ever dated. I did see they started in Canada, but have a US outlet now. I love these styles, I have sold several Knit-O-Graf patterns, but now I'll watch for Mary Maxims. Thanks, Rueby!
ReplyDeleteI'll take C-16 please.
ReplyDeleteAnd I bet there are folks who'd pay money to see you wear those!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great posting I have read. I like your article.
ReplyDeleteI have 2 of them from 1958 and 1962 respectively, one knit for my mother and one that my mother knit for my Grandfather...I wear them both.. all the time.
ReplyDeleteI am looking for a Mary Maxim sweater pattern that has a hockey player on it. Does anyone know if this exists?

I found them also under the number 14248 and 474 and 4063. I don't know why there are different numbers, maybe for different sizes or different years?
I need a catalog with these types of patterns and kits in like mary maxium use to carried. I made the one with deer and pine trees and then lined it like a jacket and put a heavy duty zipper in it for a Christmas present. I would love to choose different designs for my grown kids and spouses and my grandbabies. can any one help. these were in a kit and the directions were on a graph. email glotree@att.net
ReplyDeleteI called Mary Maxim and talked with a Customer Service Rep and explained I needed a pattern 8 - 12 size for a boys jacket with a hockey man on the back of the sweater and a hockey stick on each side of the front of this sweater jacket. She found the pattern for me (vintage)-cost $3.99. She is making a copy of this pattern and mailing it to me $2.00 shipping.
